I don’t think I’ve really talked about this here before, but I used to be a huge Pokemon fan. I can’t even count the number of people I’ve known who would roll their eyes if they heard me say that. I’ve been away from thew franchise for a long time, though… I’m only really familiar with the first two generations, and I only still own a little bit of merchandise. I have, however, been frequenting quite a few pokemon-based Youtubers, one of which is the loveable Tamashi Hiroka!
Back in January, Tamashi did a video where she answered a long list of questions about her pokemon fanhood, and since it looked like a lot of fun, I’ve decided to tackle this list as well. These are my answers for the Pokemon Tag!
1. What is your favorite Pokemon Type?
I can’t say I ever really had one, for any recognizable reason. I guess I’d pick Poison, just because it sounds the coolest out of the options available. There’s no significant reason, though.
2. What is your favorite region?
I guess I’d go with the Johto Region, just because it’s the one I started with, and it’s the one that I can picture the most freshly in my mind.
No, you know what? You didn’t specify whether or not it had to be in the games, so I’m going to go with Orange Islands. It was my favorite season of the show, and frankly, I love the idea of floating around from island to island completing challenges instead of actual pokemon gym battles.
3. Which Pokemon games do you own?
At the moment? Well, there’s Black, Heartgold, Stadium, Stadium 2, Snap, and one of the mystery dungeon games.
4. In the games, which gender do you normally play as?
I normally go female, just because the sprite looks cute. It doesn’t really matter in the end, though, as… Much lioke in Skyrim… Your gender doesn’t have any noteworthy effect on the gameplay. At least from what I’ve seen.
5. Do you watch the anime?
I used to, but I stopped during the Johto journey episodes. I was getting into my late teens at the time, and I was getting kind of tired of the story, due to a combination of the series quality going downhill and myself just getting too old to stay interested. At that stage, I was already starting to feel that each episode was just a commercial for a different pokemon, and that nothing going on in any of them would be important in future episodes.
6. How many seen in the PokeDex of your latest game?
Well, I restarted Heartgold a while back, but put it back down sometime after earning my second badge, so… Not much.
7. In that game, how many owned in the PokeDex?
8. Do you even like Pokemon?
Yep… I just don’t really engage in it anymore. I consider it an important part of my youth, though. I mean, seriously, there was a good three year period where I wouldn’t talk about anything else. My first girlfriend dumped me because of how obsessed I was, and no, that is not in any way an exaggeration.
9. Do you collect the trading cards?
Once again, nope. I stopped just before the second generation came out, and the number of new creatures to collect grew higher than my interest would allow me to keep following. At some point, I realized that it was draining my meager allowance too much.
10. If you have the trading cards, do you play the game or just collect?
I used to play the game a lot, and I was moderately good at it. Not bad, not great, just moderately good at it. I was much better at Yugioh, but my recent attempts at rejoining that card game have proven just how radically the landscape has changed. I did belong to a club that met in the afternoon every week at Toys’R’Us. I earned two badges, and please, don’t ask me how that system works. I didn’t understand it then, and I don’t understand it now.
11. Do you draw Pokemon?
Oh, did I ever! I used to get in trouble in class because I couldn’t stop drawing them instead of paying attention. I really sucked at it, but I never stopped, and I even drew my own invented pokemon. Like Barkspark, Whalossul, and… I forgot the others! I meticulously drew all of the original 151 on a wooden gumball machine that a relative made for me.
12. What is your favorite Pokemon?
Well, this is kind of a cheat, but I’m going to go with two pokemon… Pidgeotto and Pidgeot. The first rare foil card I ever owned was a Venomoth, and I knowingly traded it for a non-foil Pidgeot, even though it wasn’t worth as much, just because I loved those two so much. It dates back to my first attempt at playing Pokemon Yellow, where I managed to encounter and capture a wild pidgeotto, skipping the pidgey phase completely… Just like Ash did! It wound up being the most dominant member of my party, and although I can’t remember how, I used him… And only him… To beat Brock. I know, crazy, right?
And yeah, Ash ditching him was a huge blow to my fanhood.
13. What is your second favorite?
I guess Bulbasaur… I don’t really know why, but I guess it has something to do with the Giant Pokemon episode, where Ash’s pokemon were allowed to talk to each other with subtitles, and his Bulbasaur was the funny sarcastic one. Also, to this day, I still own a Bulbasaur plush(probably fake, but whatever) that my dad won for me when I was younger. I’ve mentioned it in a review before.
14. What is your favorite legendary?
Ooh… Well, my favorite pokemon movie was the second one, so I guess I’ll have to go with Lugia. It’s a pretty arbitrary choice, though.
15. What is your second favorite?
Ugh… Mewtwo, I guess? He’s the most complex and developed out of them, and I love the fact that they cloned a new one to be a villain in the series again. It’s presence was greatly missed in the interim.
16. Do you know what number 493 in the national dex is?
Donkeytron? Chuchu Nezumi? Pengin? Shoe? I dunno.
17. Would you rather have a Meowth or a Growlithe?
I see what you did there… Am I a cat person or a dog person? Well, I’m definitely a cat person, but there’s more to consider than just personal preference. Meowth throws money, but Growlithe throws fire. So do I want a cat pokemon that could grant me unlimited wealth, or a dog pokemon who could dole out unlimited destruction? Well, the one who’s disobedience would be less likely to kill me would be the Meowth, so I’ll go with Meowth.
18. Do any of your relatives play Pokemon?
I honestly have no idea. My brother played an old file recently, for the sake of nostalgia, but I doubt he’s still committed to it.
EDIT: Scratch that, he is. It’s Fire-Red, and he’s still trying to catch ’em all on it. He’s currently trying to get Mew through some cheat that involves catching Mewtwo, battling 100 trainers, battling 100 pokemon in Mewtwo’s cave… Something like that. I have strong suspicions that it’s a wild goose chase, but he’s a determined little bugger.
19. How often do you think about Pokemon?
Not nearly as often as I used to. I like to fantasize about what it would be like if actual time was applied to the series, and famed butcher Gen Orobuchi were trusted with writing a final season to the franchise. Can you imagine how epic that would be? Themes, continuity, consequences, death…
20. Do you hide the fact that you like Pokemon from your real life friends?
No, but it never really comes up in conversation. I’m willing enough to admit that I have a history of it, but if nobody asks, I keep it to myself.
21. What pets do you have that resemble Pokemon?
Ooh! I have a gray Maine Coon cat who I often say looks like a Zigzagoon.
22. What Pokemon do you hate the most?
Well, to be honest, I really don’t hate any pokemon… I never have. There’s a few that I love, a few that I’m fond of, and hundreds of others that I don’t give a Muk about. Well, that is, unless you count Super Smash Bros Melee, in which case the pokemion I hate the most is Pichu, who I strongly believe was added to the game as a sick joke. I mean, it’s the same as another character, but all of it’s best moves give it recoil damage! What is wrong with the person who decided to include it in the first place?
23. Which Eeveelution do you like the best?
Hmm… Iunno. I guess Vaproeon looks the coolest.
24. Which Castform forme is the best?
What the Muk is Castform?
25. Which Deoxys forme is the best?
It has mutliple forms? Look, I didn’t stick with the franchise that long…
26. Articuno, Zapdos, or Moltres?
Zapdos. It’s the most useful of the three, as it’s only real weakness is rock type moves. Also, it’s really pointy and spiky looking, which is awesome.
27. Lugia or Ho-Oh?
Lugiah? I stated as much earlier…
28. Which two people will you tag?
You know what? This isn’t on youtube, so I can’t tag actual content makers, so instead, I’m going to tag WordPress users ThyCriticMan and Little Monster Girl.
Well, that’s my pokemon tag… I hope you’ve found those answers to be revealing and satisfying, although I didn’t have very long answers for some of them. Next week, it’s a return to form with a review!
